Do you want to study in Poland in the 2026/27 academic year? The most important rule is simple: admission is decided by the specific university, and the candidate applies directly to the chosen higher education institution. The university sets the admission requirements, list of documents, deadlines, fees, and any entrance exams or interviews.
Recruitment for first- and second-cycle studies usually starts in April or May, may last several months, and the academic year in Poland typically begins in October.
Who can apply?
For first-cycle (bachelor’s/engineering) and long-cycle master’s studies, you must have a secondary school leaving certificate that allows you to start university studies in the country where it was issued or is recognized in Poland.
For second-cycle (master’s) studies, a higher education diploma is required.
From July 1, 2025, for many applicants with foreign documents, an additional statement from the Director of NAWA is also important, confirming eligibility to apply for studies in Poland. This does not apply, among others, to documents issued in EU, EFTA, and OECD countries, or to IB and EB diplomas.
What documents are required?
The exact list is always provided by the university, but most commonly required are:
- application form
- passport or other identity document
- photograph
- school certificate or diploma
- transcript of records or diploma supplement
- certified translation of documents (if not issued in Polish or English)
- proof of language proficiency
- sometimes also a portfolio, entrance exam, or interview
The official Study in Poland portal also emphasizes that candidates should contact the university as early as possible, as detailed procedures vary between institutions and programs.
What level of language is required?
If a foreigner is not an EU citizen (as defined by regulations) and is applying for studies conducted in Polish or another language, they must prove proficiency in the language of instruction at a minimum level of B2.
From July 31, 2025, regulations specify which documents are recognized. Depending on the situation, these may include language certificates, a diploma from a school or university where the language was the medium of instruction, or other documents listed in the regulation.
When should documents be submitted?
There is no single nationwide deadline. Each university conducts recruitment according to its own schedule.
In practice, it is best to start preparations in winter or early spring 2026 and begin collecting documents even before the application process opens. This is especially important for candidates from outside the EU, as document recognition, language certification, and visa procedures may take time.
What happens after receiving the admission decision?
After a positive decision, the university issues a document confirming admission. This document is required for further formalities, especially if the candidate needs to apply for a visa.
The Study in Poland portal clearly indicates that after admission comes the stage of preparing residence documents and traveling to Poland.
Is a visa required?
Citizens of the EU/EEA and Switzerland do not need a visa to start studies in Poland.
Applicants from outside these countries usually need to obtain a national D visa or—after arrival—legalize their stay in Poland.
The visa process typically requires:
- a university admission document
- proof of education
- proof of language proficiency
- financial means for living
- often health insurance
Specific requirements should always be checked on the website of the appropriate consulate.
What about residence after arrival?
If your studies justify staying in Poland for more than 3 months, a foreigner may apply for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of studying.
The application is submitted to the voivode responsible for your place of residence. You must provide proof of admission, financial means, and health insurance.
A subsequent residence permit for students may be granted for the duration of studies extended by 3 months, but not longer than 3 years.
What should you remember?
The four most important things are:
- choose your university early
- check the status of your certificate or diploma
- prepare proof of language proficiency at B2 level
- do not leave visa formalities until the last minute
For the 2026/27 academic year, it is a good idea to start preparations at the beginning of 2026 to complete recruitment, travel, and legalization of stay in time.
