Course Description

Course Profile

Aim of the programme:

Master Program in Sustainable Horticulture provides student competencies in soft skills: problem-solving; accumulation, elaboration and critical data analysis; propagation of knowledge, working in the multidisciplinary team. Studies offer a wide range of practical classes, including work in a modern greenhouse and analytical laboratories. 

Main mandatory subjects:

• 1 Semester: Foreign language, Advanced issues in sustainable pomology, Medicinal and aromatic plants, Advanced issues in sustainable production of vegetables, Arboriculture, Plant functioning under environmental stresses, Impact of environmental degradation and climate changes on sustainable horticulture, Aspects of plant pathology in sustainable horticulture, Pest control in sustainable horticulture, Intellectual properties, Advanced information technologies

• 2 Semester: Forein language, Breeding and sustainable propagation of fruit plants, Sustainable methods of seed production and propagation of vegetable and medicinal plants, Breeding and sustainable propagation of ornamental plants, Environmental monitoring and detection of plants pests, Role of plants diseases detection in sustainable horticulture production, Diploma seminar, Facultative subjects: Nutritional properties of fruits from organic production, Pruning and training of trees and shrubs, Plant physiology aspects in sustainable production of herbs and vegetables, Wild-growing medicinal, food and cosmetic plants, Indoor flower arrangements, Practicum of phytopathological research, Insect behaviour

• 3 Semester: Diploma seminar, Fruit quality, Postharvert treatment of vegetable and medicinal plants, Evaluation and shaping of ecological structure in landscape, Phytoremediation, Economics, management, marketing in horticulture, Facultative subjects: Ecotoxycology, Decision support systems in fruit production and storage, Quality evaluation of plant products, Essential oils application in sustainable horticulture, Plants' mysteries under microscope, Ornamental plants in human environment, Integrated methods pests management, The microworld of fungi, Plants in human diet

• 4 Semester: Diploma seminar, Humanities/social subject: A man in a bussines, Cultural heritage of the gardens, Ethnobotany, Protection of cultural heritage in rural areas, Law and sociological aspects of landscape and ecological infrastructure protection

Career prospects: horticultural production; private agribusiness; horticultural consulting; raw materials and cosmetic laboratories; education; scientific and research institutions.

Education Requirements

diploma of first cycle studies (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the field of horticulture, plant health care or diploma of related field of first cycle studies (Bachelor degree or equivalent), for which the effects of education are convergent with the learning outcomes expected from candidates; in case of number of candidates exceeding the admission limit – graduates will be admitted based on the average grade from first cycle studies

confirmed knowledge of English language at minimum B2 level – list of eligible certificates
