Course Description

Course Profile

Modelling and Data Science is taught in English. When studying Modelling and Data Science, one can acquire proficient skills in the field of data science and computer modelling based both on data and fundamental principles (so-called ab-initio approach). A data scientist is considered one of the most highly coveted professions of the 21st century and the study program includes skills and knowledge beyond that: advanced programming in Python and C++, computer simulations, modern physics, photonics and laser technologies, quantum computing. Students also master complex mathematical methods with a particular emphasis on numerical methods and optimization algorithms.

Core course units:

  • Programming for Modelling and Data Analysis
  • Numerical Methods
  • Computer Simulations
  • Big Data
  • Process Modelling for Industry 4.0

·         Optoelectronics and Photonics

  • Quantum Computing

Each student pursuing a degree in Modelling and Data Science completes at least one semester abroad as part of their programme of study (it is usually the 6th semester and it is called the Mobility Semester). Currently, the International Faculty of Engineering (IFE) has over 100 agreements with universities all around Europe.

In the last semester of the study, there are no regular classes. It is fully reserved for industrial placement and thesis preparation. It is not uncommon that by reaching this semester, students are already employed and their thesis is strictly job-related.

Several companies have expressed demand for alumni of Modelling and Data Science:

  • Ericsson
  • TomTom
  • Corning
  • BeNeering
  • BioNanoPark

Graduates with a degree in Modelling and Data Science are prepared to pursue a career in advanced technologies in international teams working on European and global scale projects. They will have knowledge and skills in process modelling based on the basic rules that govern them (in particular physical laws in the case of modelling in science and technology), data analysis, computational design and computer simulations. In addition to possessing a specific set of skills, a graduate of MDM will be a person with broad horizons, shaped through taking classes in those fields of science, in which data analysis plays an essential role, e.g. material physics or photonics, as well as by soft skills classes, such as teamwork.

The competences will allow both continuing the studies in the second degree as well as being directly employed as a data analyst, modelling specialist, data engineer. The distinguishing feature of Modelling and Data Science graduates is  the ability to combine fundamental laws and models with data mining methods for the so-called hybrid modelling, which is becoming increasingly popular in both scientific, financial and IT sectors.

Education Requirements

Candidates have to hold a legalized diploma of first degree studies or another foreign document that entitles them to continue education at the second degree studies level.

A candidate must have very good knowledge of English proven by an international language certificate or an official document issued by candidate’s university stating that English was medium of instruction on the first degree study programme they have completed.

List of accepted international language certificates is also available on our website: https://rekrutacja.p.lodz.pl/en/language-requirements
